We are currently living in challenging and unprecedented times that have had a huge impact on the mental health of both adults and children.  All young people have been affected by Covid19 and in particular the closing of schools, colleges and universities.  There is still a lot of uncertainty ahead of us, and education continues to be interrupted.  The impact of Covid19 has seen a huge rise in the number of children and young people experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety and low mood.  Mental Health Services such as CAMHS are overrun with the demand that this is placing on them, and so teachers and other education staff are having to deal with the impact of this.

Mental Health, Anxiety and Learning

There is clear evidence that high and anxiety and low mood cause significant barriers to learning. High levels of anxiety are not conducive to learning or concentrating in a lesson.

“Even if you manage to take in what is being said, the information is likely to bounce around [in your brain], not being processed properly or stored in your long-term memory.”

Dr Angharad Rudkin, Clinical psychologist

It can also cause other related issues such as more challenging behaviour, low attainment, poor attendance and even school refusal.
