Supporting Non Association Independent Schools/ Independent Special Schools and Alternative Provision with Ofsted
From January 2026, Ofsted will inspect non-association independent schools, including independent special schools and alternative provision settings, under a new inspection framework tailored specifically for this sector. This replaces the previous Independent Schools Inspection Handbook and introduces a dedicated inspection toolkit.
Independent special schools now make up 63% of all non-association independent schools, reflecting a significant shift in the sector. This growth highlights the increasing diversity of provision and the need for inspection approaches that reflect the unique contexts of these schools. Our mock inspections are tailored to meet the needs of all settings, including special schools and alternative provision, under the new Ofsted framework from January 2026.
Ofsted inspects all of these types of independent school and the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspects the schools that are members of an association.
All independent schools must meet all the paragraphs of the Independent School Standards (ISSRs) in order to maintain their registration. The DfE is very clear and unambiguous about this requirement. ISSR compliance is integral to getting a positive inspection outcome.
JMC are specialists in supporting non association independent schools and independent special schools and Alternative provision ( AP) with unrivalled knowledge and experience inspecting against the Ofsted framework and the ISSRs. We support schools through our in-school training, expert-led compliance & safeguarding webinars, school improvement reviews, audits and mock inspections.
Our mock inspections and training are fully aligned with this new framework, helping schools prepare confidently and effectively.
🧭 What’s New in the 2026 Ofsted Framework for Non Association Independent Schools?
Ofsted now evaluates schools across six graded areas, plus safeguarding:
- Inclusion
- Curriculum and Teaching
- Achievement
- Attendance and Behaviour
- Personal Development and Well-being
- Leadership and Governance
Safeguarding is judged separately as either ‘met’ or ‘not met’.
Each graded area uses a new five-point scale:
- Exceptional
- Strong Standard
- Expected Standard
- Needs Attention
- Urgent Improvement
🔍 No More Deep Dives
The new framework moves away from subject-specific deep dives. Instead, inspections focus on contextual priorities, professional dialogue, and whole-school impact. Our mock inspections reflect this shift, reducing pressure on middle leaders and promoting a more collaborative approach.
📱 Mobile-Friendly Report Cards
Schools will now receive streamlined, mobile-friendly report cards summarising:
- Inspection outcomes
- Key strengths
- Areas for development
We help schools interpret these reports and use them to inform strategic planning and school improvement.
🧠 Staff Well-being Matters
The new framework includes a well-being check for staff. Our mock inspections are designed to be supportive, developmental, and low-stress, helping staff feel confident and prepared.
