Setting up or developing an independent school involves meeting strict DfE registration and compliance requirements, including the Independent School Standards. New schools must submit a full registration application and undergo an Ofsted pre‑registration inspection to show they are likely to meet the standards before opening.
Ofsted inspectors review safeguarding, curriculum, leadership, governance and premises suitability. Schools don’t need to create extra documents, but required policies and evidence must be organised and accessible. Leaders must also be available to meet inspectors.
