This course helps secondary school staff understand the barriers faced by disadvantaged pupils and implement strategies to improve outcomes. It covers inclusive school culture, effective teaching, and targeted interventions, with practical activities throughout.
Understanding Disadvantage
Aim: To explore what disadvantage means and its impact on learning.
- Defining disadvantage (Pupil Premium, socio-economic factors, other vulnerabilities)
- Academic, social, emotional, and cultural barriers
- Key data and evidence (attainment gap, attendance, behaviour, exclusions)
- Voices of disadvantaged pupils – case studies, quotes, or video clips
Creating an Inclusive School Culture
Aim: To consider whole-school strategies that promote inclusion and equity.
- Leadership and ethos – setting high expectations for all
- Staff training and awareness of unconscious bias
- Building positive relationships and trust with pupils and families
- Attendance, behaviour, and safeguarding systems
- Examples of effective pastoral support models
Effective Teaching and Learning Strategies
Aim: To identify classroom practices that help disadvantaged learners thrive.
- High-quality teaching as the biggest lever
- Scaffolding and adaptive teaching
