Leaders Programme : Academic Leadership

The JMC Academic Leadership Programme is a bespoke programme designed to suit the needs of individual schools or clusters of schools. Unlike other programmes it does not involve sending individuals away to distant venues with considerable travel and cover costs. Rather than spending £500+ on training one individual the programme is best delivered to groups of middle leaders in your school or cluster at a considerable saving and greater impact. The timings for sessions are decided by negotiation to best suit your needs. We also offer a choice of content reflecting the fact that the needs of middle leaders in all schools are not necessarily the same.

This course is for:

Aspiring or recently appointed Middle Leaders (Subject, Phase or Key Stage)

This programme is available at two levels. Level 1 is designed for an aspiring or recently appointed colleague. Level 2 is designed for colleagues with 2 or more years of experience in the role.

INSET Outline

Level 1

One day Introduction to Academic leadership in Schools the ‘principles’ of being a middle tier leader.

This first day includes the opportunity for some staff to train as in-school mentors for the programme.

Followed by 3* morning/afternoon or twilight sessions chosen by SLT from the following:

  1. Effective Lesson Observation and feedback
  2. Conducting Appraisals and annual reviews
  3. Recruiting, appointing and developing staff
  4. Managing staff and parental expectations
  5. How to build high performing teams

Level 2

One day Introduction to Academic leadership in Schools the ‘principles’ of being a middle tier leader.

This first day includes the opportunity for some staff to train as in-school mentors for the programme.

Followed by 3* morning/afternoon or twilight sessions chosen by SLT from the following:

  1. Developing the use of data to monitor and improve pupil performance
  2. Effective Subject or Phase Developmental Planning
  3. Improving Teacher performance through coaching and mentoring
  4. Developing smarter marking and feedback
  5. Managing change from a subject or phase point of view

Who facilitates?

Our team of experienced facilitators includes current and former Head Teachers, current inspectors as well as outstanding teacher trainers.  The Academic Leadership Programme is usually delivered by two of our facilitator team.

Delivery

The aim of the Academic Leadership Programme  is to deliver a high quality programme at low cost (both in terms of time and money) to schools.

Training is provided in the following ways:

  1. Face to face training- Delegates take part in one whole day core content training session in levels 1 and 2 followed by 3 half day or twilight sessions ( length and timing is arranged to fit with the school’s needs)
  1. Online distance support – the facilitators will be available for contact by email and Skype if necessary at designated times throughout the programme.
  2. In-school mentoring- This may be an experienced Subject/Phase Leader or  Senior Leader who will act to support delegates through the programme.

*Additional sessions may be negotiated at an additional cost
