This was always true – the aim of great teaching was not to be applauded and take a bow; it was to ensure that pupils left the classroom with better understanding of new material, confident consolidation of previous learning, enthusiasm and curiosity to continue and come back for more. It was never about us, it was always about them.

 

ISI BSO Inspection

The DfE have put in place a voluntary inspection scheme for overseas schools. This ensures schools provide their pupils with the skills and qualifications they need to enter or re-enter the British education system.
Inspections for BSOs follow a similar framework and guidance to those used for independent school inspection in England. In September 2017, the DfE implemented new standards for BSOs; these are based closely on the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014, but also take account, where possible, of compliance with any local requirements.

BSO Accreditation

‘British schools overseas: standards for schools’ lists the standards that all accredited British schools overseas must meet.

To become accredited British Schools Overseas must have an inspection every 3 years which shows that their performance against all the standards is at least satisfactory.

The latest incarnation of an ISI BSO inspection,  sharpens the focus and makes explicit their interest in the ‘Outcomes for Pupils’ – any day, anywhere, any lesson, any activity – what are the outcomes for pupils?

Schools will need to change their focus to be seen at their best. The 8 targets for achievement, and the further 8 for personal development will not be new to schools, but they will now be ‘up front and personal’, rather than taken for granted and ‘presumed present until proved absent.’

Inspectors in classrooms will no longer be noting broad summaries of good and less good practice from staff and pupils. They will be filtering what they see through a template that allows them to judge outcomes for pupils against 16 specific expectations.
